Seal Leaks
Make sure you add caulk or weatherstripping to seal air leaks from doors or windows. This will keep the heat in and chill out.
Use the Sun
Mother Nature can be your biggest ally. Take advantage of the heat produced by the sun and open your curtains to naturally heat your home during the day. It’s important to remember to close the curtains at night which will help insulate the area around the windows and reduce the chill in your house.
Take Advantage of Your Fireplace
A fireplace isn’t just for show. Fireplaces can be a huge benefit for your heat savings if used properly. When your fireplace is in use, lower your thermostat to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, if you open the nearest window slightly (less than 1 inch) while the fireplace is in use, this increases the circulation in the room. If you don’t use your fireplace, prevent cold air from getting into your home and warm air from escaping by plugging and sealing the chimney flue.
Water Heater Setting
Here is one area where you can see big savings–water heating accounts for less than 20% of your home energy consumption. Set your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (or the warm setting), and you’ll see an increase in savings. An added benefit–you’ll prevent burning your hands when touching your water heater.
