Do you know that you can freeze your pillow to stay cool? If you have enough room in your freezer, place your pillow in a plastic bag to avoid it getting wet, then put it in the freezer.

Having your ceiling fan spin clockwise is ideal for the winter months because it causes cold air to rise up and forces warm air to go down. Unfortunately, this isn’t helpful for cool spring and sweltering summer days. Luckily, you can set your fan to spin counterclockwise to stay cool for the opposite effect.

While keeping a bedroom door closed may keep it cooler, it is more beneficial to leave it open when you’re not home. Why? Because keeping one door closed actually increases your utility bills and energy consumption. Houses are designed for airflow, and closing off one room disrupts this. In the closed room, there is no airflow, which causes the air to pressurize and escape. When the air escapes, it is replaced by air that isn’t filtered through your HVAC system. Instead it comes from your chimney or water heater. If you keep all the doors in your home open, you can cool the entire house with clean air.

Air conditioning is great at keeping us cool in the summer. For an added benefit, use a ceiling fan while you use your air conditioning to save money. Each degree you lower your thermostat, you increase cooling costs by 6%. Instead, if you use both a ceiling fan (set to spin counterclockwise) and an air conditioner, you’ll keep your cool while keeping money in your wallet.
